How does e-learning work?

E-learning can take a number of different forms and there is an ongoing debate about its true definition.

Increasingly, the term ‘e-learning’ is used in a broad sense to refer to any aspect of learning that involves the use of IT and covers many aspects of the learning process, including in some cases the information systems that support the learning/teaching process.

In its most basic form, E-learning may simply involve the replacement of traditional teaching tools with more sophisticated technological solutions, such as using presentation software and computer driven presentations in place of OHP transparencies. At a more sophisticated level, e-learning might offer a blend of technology tools, combined with, for example, traditional classroom delivery resulting in courses delivered partially via the Internet. We'll look at these in more depth later.

A Google search on "define: e-learning"
returns a page of definitions that all suggest that e-learning is delivered when computer technology is applied to enhance the learning process, provide teaching and learning tools and support for the learner.
